The Love Behind Willow and His Magic Sock
I wanted to be as happy as my puppy playing with our socks.
That was the thought I had watching Willow on the floor, carefree and completely delighted with something so simple. He rolled onto his back, held the sock in his paws, and tossed it around, catching it and playing some more. I watched him with so much love, wondering what could give me that much joy. I was at one of the lowest points in my life, trying to figure that out.
I had written about my experiences. I had written a memoir and signed copies of it. Putting those parts of my life into words mattered to me, but I was beginning to want something different from my writing. I wanted to have fun with it. I wanted to let my imagination wander somewhere playful.
I no longer wanted to live in my trauma. I wanted to create playful love.
I didn’t know exactly what that would look like yet. In fact, I didn’t realize I was already creating a story in my head while I watched Willow with his sock. The words and the idea would take shape later. First, there was our puppy on the floor, having the best time, and me wanting a little of what he had.
That is where Willow and His Magic Sock began.
His love for a sock became the beginning of adventures I could imagine for him. In the stories, Willow and his magic sock travel to different places, meet new friends, and learn about the world before returning home by dawn. There is room for curiosity, kindness, and the excitement of discovering something new. Writing those adventures gave me somewhere joyful to go, too.
I could think about where Willow might travel next and who he might meet. I could take the love I felt watching him play and put it into something a child could hold. That still means so much to me: the idea that a little moment in our home could become part of story time in someone else’s.
This weekend, I signed two copies of my Willow books that a friend had bought.
I had signed books before, so the act itself was familiar. But these felt different. I don’t think I fully understood how different until I got home.
There was Willow, playing with his socks again.
I was watching him and laughing. Then the tears came.
I felt so proud of what I had created. Happy tears streaming down my face.
Watching him brought me back to where the idea began. I remembered wanting to feel the kind of happiness he found so easily on the floor with his sock. Now there were books. Stories I had imagined and worked on, with copies I had just signed for someone to take home.
And there I was, laughing at the puppy who had inspired them. The room was filled with a warmth that only pure, unfiltered joy could bring. It was a reminder that happiness doesn’t always have to be grand or elusive; sometimes it’s found in the simplest of things, like a playful puppy and a well-loved sock.
As I sat there, I realized that Willow and his magic sock had become more than just a story. They were a testament to the power of imagination and the healing nature of creativity. Each tale I pen is a little piece of my heart, woven with threads of wonder and discovery. They are a celebration of life’s small joys and the magic hidden in everyday moments.
The stroies are a reminder that it’s okay to seek out joy and to create it, even when life feels heavy. Willow, blissfully unaware, continued his playful antics, his tail wagging as if to say, “This is what happiness looks like.”
And for that moment, I was content, knowing that in my own way, I had captured a bit of that happiness and set it free into the world.
I take great pride in my memoir and the bravery it required to share my journey. I also cherish these books, as they represent my willingness to write something lighthearted simply for the joy of creating.
Willow has no idea what his playful antics with our socks started. He keeps playing, and I keep watching him with love.
This weekend, I let myself feel proud, too.
